One of the highlights of a trip to Yellowstone in September of 2008 was seeing the famous bull elk simply named #6.
We were in Mammoth Hot Springs, standing amongst an awestruck crowd as we all watched this majestic, powerful creature come down the hill with his harem in tow. His trophy-sized rack was an impressive sight.
This notorious elk was known for his aggressive behavior, causing damage to cars and even attacking people at times. Park officials, to reduce the danger this giant amoung elk posed, removed his antlers in 2004 and 2005.
No. 6 was believed to be around 15 years old and weighed approximately 725 pounds. The life expectancy of elk usually is between 13-18 years.
Unfortunately, this favorite among tourists was found dead of a freak accident, tripping and somersaulting onto his back while trying to cross a fence near Yellowstone and then suffocated from the accident. I was so glad that I had painted this memorable elk.
